Virtual Summer 2020 Work Program
(Salem/Peabody/Lynn)

LEAP’s six-week virtual work program offered a unique opportunity for 35 students (minimum age requirement of 14) to design individual work-based learning projects, have one-on-one career mentors, and participate in virtual career readiness training.

The virtual program began on July 6th and concluded on August 14th with formal presentations made by students and their mentors.

Students who participated in the program:

Icon - Student Stipend Money Symbol Earned a stipend! Stipends were earned through hours worked, attendance, and project completion.

Icon - Student In Virtual Setting Completed career readiness training and participated in live virtual sessions with LEAP staff and other professionals.


Icon - Light Bulb Worked on a project that aligned with their career interests.

Icon - Talk Bubble Worked with a career mentor weekly for career exploration,  and project feedback.

PROGRAM GOALS

To support the development of key soft skills through workshops and applied learning.

To provide students with high-quality career development experiences that foster positive connection to peers, employers, mentors, and the larger community.

To engage students in challenging projects that connect to a career of interest.




STUDENTS

56 students from Salem, Peabody, Lynn and Gloucester participated in the summer internship program. Thank you to MassHire for providing the funds to provide paid internships for 37 students.  LEAP funded the internships in Gloucester from private grants and donations.

GROUP FACILITATORS

7 group facilitators were paid staff, each of whom managed a group of 5-8 students.  Each facilitator met with his or her students 4 days a week. Their responsibilities were:

  • to case-manage student’s progress around their individual career-related projects
  • to hold office hours each day of the program to assist students with their independent work
  • to help out in workshops
  • to troubleshoot any concerns of the career mentors
