Expanding Horizons Summer Programs

Expanding Horizons summer programs offer enrichment activities and social-emotional support for middle school students through project-based learning and a variety of programs in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

SPECIFIC SUMMER PROGRAM INFORMATION

HEALTHY HARBORS

For students entering 6th grade in fall of 2019

Students will be outdoors exploring the diversity of marine life from plankton to whales and will learn how some of these species are being threatened to extinction. Students will be at beaches, on boats, in the water snorkeling, meeting professionals in the field and delivering their own projects on a subject that interests them.

PROJECT BASED / SERVICE LEARNING

For students entering 7th grade in fall of 2019

Students will engage in a project based learning opportunity offered by a Community Partner. This learning opportunity will have a STEM and Arts focus with Social and Emotional competencies infused throughout. More information and details are to come.

POWER STEPS

For students entering 8th grade in fall of 2019

In partnership with Regulate Yours, Power Steps is designed to guide young people through a series of SEL competencies as they transition from middle to high school. Students will engage in a series of self exploration, healthy habits, relationship building, stress management, and critical reasoning activities and lessons. Next steps include post secondary education exploration, what you need to know, from applications to enrolling; exploration in self interest, goal setting, majors and careers and what you can do with different degrees. Learn about alternative educational options. Trying to balance thinking ahead but living in the moment.

ZERO ROBOTICS

For students entering 7th & 8th grade in fall of 2019

An innovative and inspiring Science and Math based program that introduces students to Computer programming, Robotics, Space engineering and experience programming space robots. The program culminates with a tournament, where students will work together to program their robots to complete a proposed challenge. The tournament and team challenge seeks to inspire middle school students and cultivate an appreciation of science, technology, engineering and math through healthy, immersive, collaborative competition. There will be two trips to MIT and students will meet scientists, technologists and astronauts.

AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT

All students participating in Expanding Horizons, with the exception of Zero Robotics students, will choose an afternoon enrichment program to engage in for the 5 weeks, each afternoon following lunch. Students can choose from Hip Hop & Expressive Dance, Theater, Archery, Team Sports, Visual Arts Program and STEM. Students will be asked to choose their top 3 on their registration form and will be placed on a first come, first serve basis.
